Origen: Escocés, Gaélico. On the Scottish west coast, the McClean family was born among the ancient Dalriadan clans. Their name comes from an ancestor's devotion to St. John. The Gaelic form of the name is Mac Gille Eoin, which means "son of the servant of St. John." First found in the Western Isles where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Variantes: MacLean, MacLaine, MacLane, MacLeane, MacClean, MacClain, McClean, MacClaine, MacGhille Eoin (Gaelic) y otros.
